How To Clean A Squirrel, Steps 5 - 8

Skin a Squirrel- Step 5 Step 5 - The lower portion of the hide should be down to the wrists if you completed Step 3.

Pull the front legs out of the hide as shown. Cut the feet off above the wrists and ankles and remove the head if not wanted.

If the head is wanted, continue skinning the hide with your knife around the head while exerting upward pull on squirrel hide until it pulls off over the nose. Do Not pull too hard.

Cut off the rear feet.

Skin a Squirrel- Step 6 Step 6 - Your squirrel should now look like this.

Remove the musk glands for a better taste. They appear as white/gray colored oval shapes in various locations. See arrows.

Skin a Squirrel- Step 7 Step 7 - The musk glands are beneath the skin on the rear legs. You must cut into the meat at the places shown by the arrows to expose and remove them.
Skin a Squirrel- Step 8 Step 8 - Cut and remove the private parts. Next make a cut through the pelvic bone and then slit the belly up the center just under the skin to avoid the entrails. Continue through the ribs and up and out the neck. Follow the arrows.

Remove entrails and discard.

Wash thoroughly.

When practiced and mastered, this is a fast way to skin a squirrel and leave little or no hair on the flesh.

Happy hunting and good eating. - Lewis E. Thomas
