I have had great success pouring saltwater on tree stumps the deer go bonkers over it and eventually the stump is removed- I fill a 5gal bucket with water and add salt util the water won't hold anymore then pour it on different stumps.

There are a number of things you can do for deer lures yourself.

A deer feeder is easy to make if you are mechanically inclined. I have made several designs from scratch and have purchased kits. I have settled on my own design that uses a 55 gal drum suspended between trees on pulleys, a spreader bar, aircraft cable, and a $20 boat trailer winch. I use a programmable timer to control a gear motor that turns a garden bulb auger in a 3" PVC pipe a 1 revolution per second. The pipe/auger/motor assembly is affixed to a funnel I have welded to one end of the drum. On a low feed setting this apparatus will feed deer daily for almost a full year on one filling. Just prior to deer season I turn it up and start dispensing about 15 gallons per day.

Home made deer lure. There are a number of easy to use formulas that have worked for me. Here are a few from easiest to a bit more complex and time:

Pure household vanilla. If it is really cold out you can improve by putting vanilla in a small clean v-8 can stacked/taped on top of another small can with a candle inside. The heat helps dissipate the scent when temperatures fall below freezing.

Acorn oil or better yet Persimmon oil. Sprinkle it around your stand or hang some wicks in the area. Again, can apply the heated can method above to any of these.

Deer gland lures - From one you harvested, or road kills. I never pass up a fresh road kill. Especially during the rut. If it is a doe or buck, cut off the hind legs above the knees and front legs at the ankles. Spot the hoves to access the grey cheese like deposits in the interdigital glands. Cut off the tarsals (inside of rear legs by knees). Cut off the metatarsals (outside of rear legs half way down from knees to hoves. Keep all of these glands separate and matched for the deer. Place the gland material into a clean mason jar, cover with 100 proof vodka. Let them age for 3 months, shaking weekly. After three months, add an amount of glycerine that is 1/2 the amount of vodka. Let it age another three months. If you have a buck, you should also take the testicles and use the same process, keeping them in a separate jar.

Then immediately prior to deer season you can blend a number the following (feel free to vary on this and experiment). This is what has worked well for me.

Doe-based lure:
Purchase 16 oz of doe uring, either normal or estrus per preference, rut timing, and budget. Add 1 oz of your doe tarsal tincture, 1/8 oz of doe metatarsal tincture, and NO MORE THAN 4 drops of doe interdigital tincture. Also, if you can find it, add up to a teaspoon of tonquin musk (this last ingredient is well worth the expense, deer love it).

Buck-based lure:
Purchase 16 oz of buck urine, add 1 oz of buck tarsal tincture, 1/2 oz of testicle tincture, 1/8 oz of buck meta tarsal tincture, and 1 teaspoon of tonquin musk.

The above gland lures are well worth the time and effort. They are far better than most commercial lures you buy off the shelf. Make sure you are getting fresh urine and you mix it right before you intend to hunt. Typically urine holds it properties only 30-60 days (even with preservatives) and at most 90 days.

Hope this helps.
